Many people leave home and move to the U.S. for work or love. Yet, there may come a time when they miss having their parents around.
Bringing their parents to the U.S. could work well – allowing their parents to help with childcare and allowing them to look after their parents as they age. Yet, this is only possible with the appropriate visa.
First, you need U.S. citizenship
If you are only here on a Green Card, then you should look at ways to become a citizen first, as only they are entitled to bring parents to join them permanently. Temporary visas may still be possible, and the parents may still be able to apply on their own basis, such as investment or showing they have a special in-demand talent.
Things can be more complicated if you were born out of wedlock
It is simpler to prove both your parents are your parents if they were married at the time of your birth, but that is not always the case. Mothers are always named on the birth certificate, so it’s the fathers who might have a more challenging time if they were not married and not named on the certificate.
If this is true for you, you’ll need to show additional details concerning when your father took responsibility for you and how they have played a part in your life. Even stepfathers may be eligible in certain instances.
Immigration law is complex, so be sure to seek help to learn more if you hope to help your parents immigrate to the United States.
